St Helier

With its busy streets, squares and pedestrianised areas, St. Helier, the capital of Jersey, is an ideal environment for shopping and entertainment. During the summer, St. Helier comes alive with a host of original street entertainment.
Celebrate Jersey's most beloved of animals, the Jersey Cow and visit the life size group of bronze cattle that are situated in West Square. Pass a leisurely morning by stimulating your senses at the central market, housed in an ornate glass roofed building where you can find fresh fruit and vegetables, fine butchers, bakers and delicatessens.
Elizabeth Castle, named in honour of Queen Elizabeth I by Sir Walter Raleigh, lies on an islet in St. Aubins Bay. The castle is a spacious fortress that has a number of exhibitions that explore its history and recreate conditions for the common soldier in his barracks. The Hermitage, a cave alleged to be the home of St. Helier before he was beheaded, is set alongside the small castle harbour and offers a great view of the capital. The highlight of a day at the castle is the firing of the noonday gun, which is carried out with great ceremony and much audience participation in and around the Grand Battery.
