Kunsthaus
This large blue building is referred to by the locals as the ‘Friendly Alien’ due to its odd appearance and design. Showcasing several varieties of modern art, the Kunsthaus provides many different exhibitions throughout the year.
Island in the Mur
This wonderfully unique floating exhibition and performance space is situated in the middle of the Mur River, designed by Vito Acconci. It is an amoeba-shaped, 320-tonne latticework construction made of steel and glass, featuring an amphitheatre, children’s playground and café-bar. One each side of the ‘island’ a tube-like bridge connects to the riverbank, linking the ancient town centre on one side with more modern neighbourhoods across the river.
Cathedral (Dom)
This cathedral was built by Emperor Frederick III and is a reminder of when Graz was an imperial city. It has been altered a number of times and the creation of the court and parish church in late Gothic style began in 1438. On the south external wall are the remains of a Late Gothic fresco (1485) with the Langplagenbild sculpture depicting Graz threatened by pestilence, the Turks and a plague of locusts, as it was at the time. It was renovated in Baroque style in the late 17th century.
Old Town
Located in the centre of the city, the Old Town is made up of cobbled lanes and chocolate box courtyards boasting Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Take in the sights of the town or have a guide show you round so you do not miss anything.
Lurgrotte
This is Austria’s largest and most striking stalactite cave and takes about three hours to cross. Book a guided tour to lead you through the narrow tunnels and incredible stalactite and stalagmite formations that will take your breath away.
