Graz

GRAZ is Austria's second city 200 km south west of Vienna and with direct daily flights from Stansted it is easily accessible as a city break destination. In 2003 Graz enjoyed its unique position as 'Cultural Capital of Europe’ and its old town was recently granted world cultural heritage status by UNESCO. The landmark clock tower which overlooks the city gives wonderful views of the red roofs below, while the colourful architecture of the main square and surrounding cobbled streets and renaissance courtyards creates a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere. In stark contrast are projects such as the new Kunsthaus, labelled by locals as the ‘friendly alien’, and the floating Island in the Mur which bring Graz boldly into the 21st century. The city’s three universities account for Graz’s young, lively feel and on warm summer evenings the bars and restaurants spill onto the streets, giving the city a distinctly Mediterranean appeal. Just 21/2 hours by train from Vienna via the delightful Semmering pass, Graz is easily combined with a stay in the Austrian capital.
