The Acropolis

The Acropolis also known as the “Sacred Rock” dominates the city’s sky line and is the most famous site in Athens. The Parthenon, which is built entirely from marble, is the largest building on the Acropolis and is an icon of Western civilisation. The temple is dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom. |

National Archaelogical Museum

This world famous museum is housed in a late 19th Century building and has one of the finest collections of ancient and classical Greek artefacts. View the excellent collection of sculptures and other treasures, including a fantastic statue of Caesar Augustus, the famed 'Agamemnon death mask'. |

Temple of Olympian Zeus
|
The Temple of Olympian Zeus is the largest of the ancient temples in Athens and is located South East of the Acropolis. This temple is dedicated to the God of Zeus and was completed in AD131 under the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Today only a few of the 104 marble columns have survived. Hadrian’s Arch is also located on the edge of this site. |

Plaka
|
The district of Plaka has an unusual maze of alleys, winding streets and stairs lined with 19th century neo-classical houses and mansions, with beautifully decorated tiled roofs. Plaka is the oldest neighbourhood in Athens, however today the area is excellent to explore. Visit the famous flea market which is located around Monastiraki Square along with other ancient sites and the small museums of traditional and popular culture. |

Panathenaic Stadium
|
The elegant three-sided stone Panathenaic Stadium is where the first modern Olympics took place in 1896. During the 2004 Olympic Games, the stadium will host the fencing contests and will be the finishing point for the marathon.

Agora
|
The Ancient Agora is the second most important ancient Greek site in Athens. The main attraction of the site is the Hepatisation which was constructed in the 5th Century and is the best preserved Doric style temple in Greece. Enjoy the museum with its collection of statues and pots from Ancient Greece along with the many columns and foundations throughout the grounds and the tiny 12th century Byzantine churches. |
